My friend volunteered to change the oil, but he had also changed the transmission fluid. I noticed that when the car came to a stop that the car would start shaking and then it wouldn't accelaerate even though the RPM's would go. I would have to shut off the car and restart it for it to move. I also noticed that the oil level on the 1987 Nissan Maxima was low and when it would come to a stop, the oil level would go down further, but when I did get teh car to accelearte it would move back up. I initially thought it might have been that he either put the wrong type of motor oil or did not put enough motor oil. Is there a car expert who can tell me what this might be?

It sounds like he messed it up for you. Don't start the car anymore, look in the manual and find out what type and brand of fluids you need, then change it again.

It sounds like you are describing oil pressure in the motor not oil level. The Gage on the dash is a pressure Gage not level. The only way to check the level is to turn car off and Check oil level on the dip stick under the hood. Check your owners manual for instructions. Now for the no acceleration.Did your friend use the proper transmission fluid? Did he use the proper amount. Too much is as bad as too little. You need to check the level in the transmission also. Consult your manual for that also. And one more thing If your car has high mileage and hasn't had the transmission fluid changed the new fluid may have washed the friction material off of the clutches. That means rebuild time $$. Moral of the story: Take your car to a reputable oil change place to get maintenance done. You have some recourse with them when there is a problem. If your friend messed up your transmission what are you going to do sue him?Check those fluid levels right away. If you run the car to much without the proper levels it will lead to costly repairs.
Good Luck

The engine oil is something to be worried about, most likely he didn't put enough oil back in your car. Also when he changed the oil did he also change the oil filter?

To check the oil leve, park your car and leave it for 3 or 4 hours, then pull out the dip stick wipe it with a paper towel, re insert it then pull it back out and look at it, the stick should have indications as to if the oil is full or not.

The transmission fluid could be low also, which would cause the problems with acceleration. The check your transmission fluid the engine has to be warm Start your engine, if you have a 15 minute drive to make, even better, in any case, the engine temp gauge needs to be above 'C' . Once you get the engine warmed up you can then check the transmission fluid just as you did the engine oil.

Of course you can always take it to a mechanic and have them look at it.

I wouldn't suggest letting your friend change the oil or transmission fluid anymore.

Wow that was risky changing the transmission fluid. Many times I reccomend customers just to leave the twenty year old transmission alone. Make sure transmission fluid is checked when the car is idling in park on level ground. Engine oil checked after the car engine is off and sits for about ten minutes to allow the oil to drain back to the crankcase. My service manual indicates your transmission uses Dextron transmission fluid. Don't blame your helpfull friend. Automatic transmissions 20 year old ones can just die after a fluid change.

Sounds like he didn't put enough transmission fluid in, but i hope he didn't put the wrong oils in the wrong place, some transmissions, well manual transmissions use engine oil, but if yours is auto it should be a different color and smell different, i think most automatic transmission oil is a reddy color, and if your engine oil is red then he has mixed it up, try topping it up first, and check the level when the motor is idling.

boy boy boy boy. ok, you got the lecture about that oil gauge. its pressure not level. sounds like your friend shorted you oil. i would drop the plug and drain and refill the oil with 5w30 oil. now the transmission. when you dont change the trans oil regularly, and its sounds like you dont, your oil collects particles off of the internal clutches inside the transmission. When you run your car with the old oil, the particles in the oil adhered to the clutches, basically taking up space and allowing the clutches to friction together and grab. now that you've drained the oil, your transmission has nothing to allow the clutches to grab. you my dear need a new transmission. the lack of go you feel when the rpms are there is your trans not grabbing a gear.

I don't have to be an expert to tell you to stop driving it! Check the trani fluid when the car is running and warm. Check the oil too. if either is low, add. If it's super low then there's a chance that one of the plugs or oil filter isn't on correctly or at all. Don't drive it till it's fixed or you could end up paying over 2 grand just to fix it.

If you have checked the oil and it's low put more in it the gauge will move down when the pump is not having to work as hard like when accelerating pressure goes up when idling it goes down. Your friend may have loosened a plug wire without knowing this would cause it to run rough check your plug wires and if you haven't changed them in a while you may need to change the plugs and wires you may also have a plugged fuel filter or air filter although the air filter shouldn't make it run rough

Naw it's not manly. Girls just usually ask a man to do it so that the men can feel manly and important. Alot of us know how to do that crap ourselves! LOL! It's like the jar lid thing....of course we can open those jars ourselves! Who cares what they think, you're taking care of it yourself and not wasting money at the mechanic or troubling someone else with it. I do the same crap on my car, it just makes more sense for me to do it since it's MY CAR. I hate making other people do my work for me. I'm sure they were just joking and don't consider you a lesbo.

Same basic answer as those above. Not enough oil or too much or not correct type could all couse this problem.

especially the transmission problem.
