it's cheaper to turn it off when no one is home, but will be uncomfortable for a few hours after you turn it on, so it can catch up.

it depends on a few different things...like, is there an animal in your home? and, is it humid where you live? and are the temperatures at night in the mid-70s? and, are you in an apartment and if so can you open your windows at night?

My bill is super low. I turn off the water heater till I'm ready to use hot water. I don't use the oven because that heats up the apartment. I use the burner (just one) for about 15 minutes every several days. I don't have a dishwasher or washer or dryer. I use batteries for my radio. I don't leave my pc on all day. I have insulated draperies.

I've heard that you should leave your AC at a setting of about 80F all day. These days at least here in the apartment it can get to 88F or more during the day, so if I let it on during the day it would not only not stop running (a huge bill) but it would freez up and then I'd really be in problems with the heat.

I've checked the meter, how fast it runs and when. Inoticed that if I have fans running (even several) then the meter runs very very slowly (just a crawl), but if I use the AC then it runs really fast....so I've changed to fans. So here's what I'd suggest. Maybe you can install a ceiling fan in each room (especially in the bathroom where mold could form if there is no movement of air) and run it on a timer during the hottest times of the day. Set your ac so that it won't run continuously. Here the hottest times of the day have changed from noonish....to now 3-6....I've checked it recently and the hottest time of the day seems to be during the ride home form work.

During the night I sleep with the windows open if the temperature is 75F or lower (but I'm not on the first floor). Hope I answered your question sufficiently.

We put in programmable thermostats so we can set the temp different for day and night and it will automatically do so. It's not that we swing far one way or the other, just a matter of a few degrees. My husband thinks it's saving a buck or two. I like the same temp regardless. Comfort is supreme.

Leave it set to one temp if it is a heat pump. Also leave it set to one temp in the summer no matter what the system, But in the winter you can set it a few degrees cooler and warmer as long as it is a gas or oil furnace which has a faster recovery time.

It is more energy efficient to set the thermostat to a higher temp while you are gone. A programmable thermostat is not very expensive and you can install it yourself. If you have two setback periods each day you can save 10-15% on your electric bill. The instructions that come with the thermostat will explain how to program it for energy savings.

I believe it is generally accepted that lowering it during the day when no one is home saves money. Yes, you will have a longer run of the A/C when you first turn it down when you get home, but that won't be as much as when it would have run all day cooling for nobody.
