I Just got taken off Effexor XL (mg tabs) permanently and put on another med that works better, and I have about 180 pills left. I don't want to dispose of them since the pharmacies charge $172.00 per 30 pills. seems like a waste of money. any suggestions?

Call up the pharmacy where you got them or other pharm's in your area and see if they will take them back for you. Or if your doctor is like mine, he can take them back and dispose of them properly. Don't flush them or pour them down the sink since it can be harmful to the environment.

Good job on getting off Effexor... my brother had a horrible time doing that
If you don't want to keep the meds - try calling your pharmacist and ask what the best thing would be to do with the pills... they can tell you better than anyone

You can't give them back if they've been opened. If by chance some are in a bottle that hasn't been opened, call the pharmacy. Some places have programs where extra meds can be distributed to those who need it. But not if the bottle has been opened.

Good luck (and congrats for being off of Effexor and on something that works better). :)

Ask your pharmacist if there is a program in your area where the drugs can be given to people who cannot afford them.I know that they are not allowed to re-sell them, but if they know someone who takes them and can't afford them, they might be allowed to give them to a person in need. I have heard that there are programs like this in several states.

Actually the best thing to do is flush them. I found this info on another site:

1) "Transfer of this drug to any person other than whom it was prescribed is against federal law."

2) "Caution: Federal Law prohibits the transfer of this drug to any person other than the patient for whom it was prescribed."

3) If the recipient of your good intentions croaks, are you willing to deal with second degree manslaughter charges?

TOSS THEM OUT!!!

The law-abiding answer here is to flush them or dispose of them in some manner that others will not get to them.

I'm sure some of the other Answers folks can provide the not so law-abiding answers that are popping into my head.

Not much you can do with them other than flushing them. Its against the law to give them to somebody after they have dispensed by a pharmacy.

some medical charities accept unused medications and redistribute them to the neeedy. I can't give you any links but with a little work you may be able to find them.

you keep collecting pills from all sorts of prescriptions and when you feel like you have had an array of brands and different pills, you put them in a bowl and you eat one by one like if they were skittles.

Enjoy!

Take them to your physician or a pharmacy and they will destroy them properly. Ü
