The woolly worm is not a worm at all - they are caterpillars, the larva of the Isabella tigermoth. Some folks call them "woolly bears".

The woolly worm's body is divided into 13 segments of black and brown 'fur'. Many folks say the color combinations of the 13 segments which correspond to the 13 weeks of winter can predict the severity of the weather. If the woolly worm's 'fur' is mostly brown the winter will be mild. Sections of black indicate the harsher weather. There is no scientific evidence that the fur colorations predict the weather, but in the last 20 years they have been 85% correct!

A woolly worm is a caterpillar. In N.E. Ohio, where I live, a small town named Vermilion has a Woolly Bear festival every year. There is a parade and prizes for the best woolly bear costumes. Kids dress up as woolly bears as do pets. It's a lot of fun.

In N.E. Ohio, woolly bears are often used to predict how bad the winters will be.
