where they king snakes? or milk snakes? if so then that is your reason, high canabilistic snakes that dont need a reason, and if that is the case then im amazed you managed to get them together at all!
as for anything else, then you either had one far bigger than the other, and it was hungry.
are you sure it was eaten? and your other hadnt just escaped? a more likly story

depending on what type of snake they were, then it could answer the question, kingsnakes and milksnakes are particularly cannabolistic, they dont need a reason.
Other types of common snakes have been known to eat each other, especially young or hatchlings, its not advisable to ever house snakes together, because of this reason amongst others, without knowing what snakes they were its too hard to make a definate answer.

It depends on what types they were and if one was smaller that the other and they hadn't eaten in awhile, then unfortunately this is the outcome.

a lot of snakes can be cannibalistic like king snake, milk snakes and cobras

I would say that they have the same reason as the female black widow spider..a courtship ritual or a wedding feast.

Physically impossible! one would eat the other but they could not eat each other unless it was from the tail think about it.
