Ferrets are adorable and really lovable, but your roommate may be allergic to them.
Have you thought of maybe getting a reptile, like a lizard or a garden snake? Those animals usually eat things like crickets, which the pet store will sell you live, and the gross factor is way lower than getting something like a snake that eats mice.
I've never actually had a snake, but I used to have 2 anoles, which is a type of lizard that eats crickets, and my dad had a snake when I was a baby (but that one ate mice - who got the great idea of keeping a snake near a baby, I'm not sure).
Edit: You could also try getting a hairless rodent, if it's just the fur that your roommate is allergic to.

There are a couple of hairless animals that seem to be okay for people that have allergies. There are hairless rats and guinea pigs (two types the Baldwin which is totally hairless and the skinny pig which has some hair). They both make excellent pets. Rats only live about 3 years and guinea pigs are 5-7.
I have included a couple of links so that you can read a bit about them and see what they look like...:)
I hope that helps.

I have a uromastyx (a type a lizard similar to a bearded dragon). He is really a cool little thing and very easy to take care of. My husband hated the idea of me bringing one home, but now he hand feeds it too! I would definately recommend one as a pet.

Rats make wonderful pets and there are some that are hairless. That might be easier for your roommate to handle.

Mine is no noth and is really tame. And because they are quite long and slim so they aren't very furry.
