Well I got it a few months after it came out, and I loved it then.
Then I lent it to a friend and NEVER GOT IT BACK...
So I bought it again. Off amazon. And the disc had scratches.
So, after buying it twice, I decided i'd quit wasting money and downloaded on bittorrent. And guess what? I love it. Still. The PC version has a lot more cheats than the console version, too, and of course mod support, so there's probably a much better lifespan. And there's a lot to do... customize your character, do the missions, upgrade your skills, or just activate that cheat that makes cars float away like balloons when you hit them. That's awesome.

I bought San Andreas when it came out and I played GTA San Andreas for about 2 years before I got bored with it. After I got bored with it I didn't play it for about 4 or 5 months and then I started playing it a little bit more, but now I've stopped playing it because I've done about all there is to do in the game.
I only beat the game once, but I'm thinking about starting a new game and going through the story again, because I haven't played through the main story since I beat it during the summer of 2005.
Even after I beat the game I didn't get tired of the game for at least another year because I just loved driving around, flying the planes and creating chaos by shooting people and running from the police.

I'm not a fan of the GTA games, I find them all to be boring and monotonous. I guess I'm not a fan of all the missions.

It depends how long you want to spend ignoring the missions and just messing about. It is the best of the series for aimless tinkering in the city. I spent hours just grabbing airplanes and flying them about, trying to land them in strange places.
So, if you follow the missions with no deviations, probably about 20 hours. But there's the potential for lots more.
