Percent just means per hundred or divided by 100. If you want say 12% of 45 for instance then change the 12% to a fraction(12/100) or a decimal(.12) and do the multiplication normally. If you want to find a % then say what percent is 6 of 30 then do the division 6/30 = .2 then multiply by 100 to get the percent .2*100=20%

Instead of saying, for example, there were 2,000 cases of yada in the UK, and 50,000 in the U.S. you'd want to look at the percents, since the US is a much bigger country.
So you don't say how many, you say what percent of people in each country had yada. That way, you can directly tell whether it's more common in one country, or you just have a bigger number, because there's more people in that country.
(This is just one sort of reason to use percents -- the kind of thing that sprang to mind.)
So, instead of looking at the raw numbers, you ask "For each 100 people in the UK, and for each 100 people in the US, how many yada-ed in each country?"
That's what percent means, "per hundred".
When working with them, I find it easier and clearer to think in terms of the simpler examples.
So, what's 50%? Well, 50 out of 100 is half. So 50% is half. Half of that, or 1/4 is 25%. Three-quarters is 75%.
33.33333% is one third.
10% is one-tenth.
When figuring a tip, for instance, which you want between 15 & 20 % of the total, I see what 10% is (easy, just move the decimal over 1 place, so a bill of 48.52, 10% is 4.85). Doubling that number gives you 20%. Taking that number, then adding half of it to itself gives you 15%. So a tip would be between, roughly, 4.85 + 2.45 (roughly, I said) or a little over $6, and $9.70 (for a 20% tip).
If you keep those simpler percents in mind (that is, the fraction they represent, like 50%, 10%, etc.), you can get a feel for a ballpark percent, so if you have to calculate, you can see whether the result of your calculation is reasonable.
I can never remember all the formulas, so I just set up an equation (when I really need to be exact):
What's 47% of 2,489?
Well, it's going to be a bit less than half, so not really far from 1,240 -- as a very rough ballpark.
47/100 = x/2,489 is the equation; solve for x. Multiply both sides of the equation by 2,489.
47/100 * 2,489 = x.
So multiply 47 by 2,489, then divide by 100. That will be the percent.
I don't have a calculator so I'm not doing it here; but I then check that number against my estimate of a little less than 1/2 to make sure I didn't goof in some big way: is it in the general vacinity of my estimate?
Not sure what else you need to know, really. Most of the time, as I said before, they're handy for comparing 2 things that are of really different sizes.

A percentage is simply a decimal multiplied by 100. If you score 50 out of 100 points on a test, you got 1/2 of the problems right, or .5 of the problems right. Multiply this by 100 to get 50%.

Percentages is just another way of expressin a fraction or a decimal. 10% = .1 = 1/10
100% = 1.0 =1
1000% = 100.0
To change from % to decimal, change % sign to a decimal point and move it to places to the left.
To change a fraction to a percent change the fraction to a decimal and then the decimal to a %. So 1/4 = .25= 25 %.
You move the the decimal 2 places to the right to change a decimal to a %.
So 10% of 100 = .1 times 100 = 10
25% of 100 = .25*100 = 1/4 *100 = 25
What % is 15 of 60?
15 = 60 x
x= 15/60 =1/4 =.25 = 25%

They are pretty simple.
Take an apple, if you cut in 100 equal pieces and you take away 10 pieces of the apple and put it in a box. Then the box has 10% of the pieces of the apple
Basically 10% = 10/100
If you want to find the percentage of a number, e.g find 10% of 300.
You would have to put it in this format:
10% * 300 = (10 /100) *300 = (10 * 300 )/100 = 3000 / 100 = 30

"Percent" literally means "per hundred". So if you say 40% of people in your class are girls...that means if there are100 people in the class, 40 would be girls. Of course in most cases, the number of things (like people in your class) doesn't equal 100. Suppose there are 28 people in your class...if 40% are girls, there are several ways to figure out how many are girls. You could esitmate...40% is just under half, so maybe around 12 of the 28??? You could use math...multiple 28 times .40 and you get 11.2. Another way to estimate is to figure out what 10% is and then multiple by 4 to get to 40%. So to get 10% of 28, just move the decimal over 1 place so it's 2.8 (or 3 to be approximate). Then multiple by 4 to get up to 40%, or 12.
Hope that helps.

6/100=6%
4/25=16%
(4 times 25=100
4 times 4 equals 16)
26/68=38%
(26 divided by 68 = .38.....
move decimal over twice
38%)
