Dogs need a lot of time, exercise and afection. If you cant be home a lot then you wouldnt be a great dog owner :o( Some cats can be very affectionate and the great thing is that they are very independant. I would say a cat would be the perfect pet for someone with your busy schedule. I didnt used to like them much until I moved into a share house that had a cat. It used to pant and chase the ball when you threw it. Pretty funny really. I hope you find something you like :)

Your best bet would probably be a rat or a rabbit if you don't want a dog or cat.

Here's the thing - most people own common pets like dogs and cats because they are adapted to living with humans and in human environments and are affectionate by their nature.

Exotics are just that - exotic - and for people who want something different and are not necessarily concerned about how affectionate they are.

So think about your priorities - what is more important - affectionate or exotic? Perhaps a rare breed of cat or dog might be a compromise for you.

Fancy rats are very affectionate, but only live about 3 years.
Ferrets are fun, not so affectionate, and tend to stink.
You can try a cockatoo or African Grey parrot. They are affectionate and live between 60 and 80 years. Smaller parrots, like a Meyer's Parrot don't live quite as long; about 35 years.

If you want a great (and low cost) pet, get a guinea pig. Personally I like the silkies the best because they are extremely soft. Guinea pigs can learn tricks and even words.
They can be put outside to eat grass (we've been doing that for over 10 years and none of them got sick from eating grass), and they are just plain cuddly (falling asleep on your lap, climbing in the sleeve of your bath robe, etc.) Guinea pigs do need attention, though. If you want more info on them, feel free to email me!
I'll give you a bit of information on some of the other pets that people have mentioned.

Rats-DO bite! I know from experience. They aren't cuddly either. But they are fun to watch when they play!

Lizards-require a lot of special care, are expensive, and aren't affectionate

Chinchillas- My best friend breeds them. They aren't exactly affectionate. They poop a LOT, don't really like being held, need lots of attention and care (not to mention space), and they live 15-20 years.

Birds- Messy and loud. I think that parrots look like fun (when you teach them tricks).

Bunnies- My brother had one. I wouldn't recommend them because they don't really like being held and they are kinda boring.

Ferrets- Great if you like an active pet and can deal with the smell! It is really cute to see them play.

Mammals are the only creatures on Earth
that are capable of showing affection toward humans.
Dogs and cats are bred for it.

Snakes and lizards, etc, are not,
but a boa constrictor will show its affection
by hugging you to death! ;)

Some pet store mice, gerbils, rabbits, and guinea pigs
might be fun for *you*,
but it's hard to say how *they* might feel about it!
Also, they are short-lived.

Some store-bought birds, like canaries and parakeets,
seem capable of returning affection,
but, they also are short-lived.

I assume horses, llamas, camels, etc, are out of the question.

P.S. Don't tell people not to leave "stupid answers".
Any answers you get are good ones.
You don't see anyone saying,
"don't give stupid *questions*", do you???
(unfortunately, those pleas fall on virtual deaf ears!) ;)

Suprisingly, a boa, or a ball python is very compassionate and loving. You don't want to get a bird because of noise, and their not always lovable. A hampster wouldn't be the greatest either. Their not always lovable, and they move around too much to be compassionate, unless their sleepy. And monkeys are quite nasty and hard to take care of though they are SOMETIMES affectionate and cute!

i used to have a mouse and he was lovely! but if you want a more exotic rodent how about a chinchilla (lives 20 yrs ah!), sugar glider, flying squirrel, rat, or a marsupial: opposum...that sorta thing or a bird: but be careful many bite and most live 50+ yr...however you could also get an exotic fish (low amount of care required, beautiful, don't live forever =)) or a truly exotic animal ex: muntjac deer.

hope these suggestions help!

An exotic pet is alot to take care of.

First and foremost whatever you decide upon make sure it is legal to own in the state that you reside in.

That aside, I like monkeys! lol

Parrots are typically very affectionate with their owner. I had a Severe Macaw that I could do absolutely anything with....flip him on his back and rub his stomach....you name it. But with that affection comes possession too. Mine adored me, but didn't like anyone else. He would actually chase my mom down the hallway. Not to mention they want ALOT of your time. Good Luck in your search.

I have a mine Rex rabbit named cuddles, He is so loving. He has never bit any one and will let any one hold him. I got him fixed and that made him even more lovable! Remember you have to clean out the cage. So if you are lazy this is not a pet for u!
