he's trying to take care of his financial future...

football contracts are all about the guaranteed money, cuz if you go down with something fairly serious teams will leave you high and dry with the quickness... and judging from oakland's O-line, it's even money that russell gets a weekly up close and personal look at the various turfs of the stadiums in the NFL....

as the number one overall pick and the supposed savior of a (insert synonym for "wretched") franchise, why the hell should he not go for as much as he can now, while his stock value is as high as it might ever be? only a few QBs really make it, so for most that 1st contract is their meal ticket... so before he gets injured, or just plain stinks and gets traded/cut with a lower market value (see former high draft pick Joey Harrington) let him try to get his paper...

he'll miss most of this year, but at least he'll be healthy and wealthy

He was smart...he knows that he will only get one big payday with gaurunteed money so he was waiting for the right money, the Raiders were under cutting his "value" that goes with being #1 and now he will have the full year to learn the offense before being thrust into a losing situation. He still has work ethic problems and many other teams said that they would have passed on him like they did on Quinn.

I don't. Whenever a situation arises where it is man vs corporation (and the raiders are a corporation) I side with the man.

That dude is gonna be in the NFL for what, 10 years? I say make the money while you can. Business is business.

JUST PLAIN GREEDY!!! All of those players makeway to much money anyways no reason to give someone unproven so much money upfront until you see what they can do. Start making contracts standard and then add in allot of incentives.

Its never just when a college athlete holds out. Sign your deal, get into camp, and learn your plays so you can help out your team.

I think there is a good chance that he thinks he might be a bust - that's why he wanted so much guaranteed money! Could he be Ryan Leaf Jr.?

Definitely greedy on his part but I heard the Raiders weren't offering him a great deal. They need to work it out quick and get him in there.

Nope, the Raiders are just super cheap, they should have negotiated his contract before they drafted him.
