To the point where they will backstab and harass other people of the same gender in an attempt to steal the attention from members of the oppposite gender?

Those people are nuts!! They just want to be the center of attention so much, they will fake friendship and backstab whoever gets in their way. They refuse to see that they could very well not be liked by the person they want. It's got to be someone else's fault, so they go crazy and hurt those people. I've seen it happen here so many times here. It's sick! I swear, those people need help.

I'm a little lost, but the backstabbing part does stick out. Usually, that means they want something that isn't really theirs to have. Sounds to me like somebody has a real problem just getting along.
I have seen what you are talking about, and it's not good.
I guess a person like that feels they are the only one who should be getting the attention and maybe more.

My guess is insecurity. They try to attract attention so they can feel important. (Sorry, but it's such an obvious reason.) It's the same reason people dress they way they do, talk the way they do, etc., etc., etc.
If they aren't "shouting": LOOK AT MEEEE!! , they feel invisible.
Unless, of course, it's personal, and it's YOU they're trying to "get"... I doubt it's that, but there are "some people"...who behave like that. IF that's the case; take 'em out! Seriously. That's just rotten.

Insecurity of how they will fare with the members of the opposite sex; Non confidence that they do not have any thing to bring to the table that others may or can do so; Selfishness because this person wants to have it all and does not want anyone else too; downright hateful and nasty people

Some people are just that desperate for attention. Usually it's due to a lack of confidence and/or insecurity in themselves. Other people are just are needy, petty people who need constant reassurances from others of their attractiveness.
