Good question. I taught a college level world history course and your question was one of the "big" questions we gave at the end of the year.
What is more important, the individual or the society?
I side with the individual. Individual rights are extremely important- like free speech, the right to worship as one wants, etc. In the U.S., individuality is praised. Working within a society and cooperating is challenging for Americans.
We are used to being rugged individualists. And,the individual is championed.
I would hope, a "good" individual would want to help society and make sacrifices for the good of the group. That does not always happen.
Great question!

I reckon good individuals make up a good society. But if you really had too choose I'd say a good society, because what's the use of having a few good individuals and some bad ones in between, it wouldn't make that big of a difference, would it now??!!

A good society. You can have a terrible society which will have certain individuals that are good but they will have little impact on the whole. A good society will have some bad individuals but have control to remove them or impact them in a good way in order to maintain a good society.

They are both important. But I dont think you can have one without the other. It starts with the individual.
