No USA is not a Third World country. There may be some sh1tholes in America, but so does every other First World nation. If you want to see a true Third World nation, I dare you to travel to the villages and slums of many parts of Africa, Asia and South America where there are corrupt dictatorships and governments and the people live in sh1t conditions - for the parents/fathers who have jobs, they're paid less than $5 a week. In the sh1tholes in America and other First World nations like Canada, Australia, Britain and the rest of Europe, a few people may be living below the Poverty Line - but at least they have a good safety net provided by their Governments which provide enough money to live on and a place to stay. True SOME people sleep through the net and end up living on the streets, but relatively speaking that's literally <1% of the population. If you're a child in a First World nation, you're guarenteed free primary and secondary education until you're 18. You're guarenteed some form of health care (even the USA - they cannot deny anybody) in emergencies and you are guarenteed rights, such as Freedom of Speech and many rights if you are arrested. Please do not belittle the true Third World countries by comparing a place like the USA to one. It's obvious you haven't travelled much.

The United States is a big country. It also has very big potential, even and especially in this day and age. There are many, many different kinds of people here. This is a great thing.

Considering the young age of this country and the great diversity of the population, Americans get along quite well. That is one reason why so many people still want to live here, especially those from groups in other countries who face oppression from official POLICY rather than individual prejudices.

Many young Europeans, especially, seem to have little recognition of the often problematic issues that exist in their own nations, both presently and in the recent past.

Perhaps some similarities you see come from the fact that the United States was (and is) a lifelong dream for many people living in (with or without citizenship) what you consider to be "third world countries."

I beg to differ with the respondent Cristina; I am not sure which "class" of people she is aspiring to, but she should know very well that opportunities for any individual to find a place in the sun have been and are more equally distributed in the US than in many, many other places.

The reason why people throughout the world hear so much about US social issues is because we have rabid free speech. It is also because they are interested in hearing about it.

Why do Americans hear so little about the historical and continuing oppression of minority populations in the nations of Europe and other parts of the world? I'm quite sure it is, to a great degree, because many of them still enjoy little opportunity to have their voices heard.

This certainly not to say the US does not have problems. However, as most immigrants can and did attest--- "say, it could be worse."

As for the irritations of the advertising industry, as well as other urban blights, a person in the US can find somewhere in the country to live, in the boonies, far away from it all, if they want to. There's still a lot of space. It's just that the party is quieter, and the definitions of "success" change.

This is an option to consider for those who come to the US and become frustrated with the standards of living in its large cities and with their own preconceived notions of an instant high-life of luxury. It costs money to be where the action is, right?

New York and LA represent only a segment of America.

Remember, our population is not homogenous. Americans are black; they are Hispanic; they are Muslims; they are all of those groups and many more. Incredible, actually, to have so much cooperation between so many different kinds of people within the borders of a single nation.

Americans and/or their parents were born in your country, too, and they freely continue to enjoy their cultural traditions while they live here.

Bash the US, you bash people from all cultural backgrounds. When Americans exhibit intolerance towards those from other cultural backgrounds, they bash Americans.

All who come here can pursue--repeat--pursue becoming citizens, etc.

Could be better, but it sure could be worse.

you already answered to yourself, the government is currupted... and the money are not invested in right way... they spend almost all the money for the army navy etc...

only about one thing lydia is right, the curruption is everywhere... for the rest LYDIA you dont know what you are saying, second point, stay cool girl, be polite and dont be off like a shot. if you have opposite ideas to munch's that's no problem, but dont forget the respect for other people.

FOR LYDIA

in italy the percentage of poor people is around 8-9% in usa is higher and if you consider its population you will realize that
Munch is right.

how can you compare the italian public school to usa public school where someday some crazy guy wakes up and take half school out... ( picking up the comparison left off: taxpayer pay a sum of money that generally they can afford. in italy my father paid for my enrollement to the high scholl 80 euros a year, and if i want to exagerate we arrive at 100, the books cost totally 500, and if you get them by second hand you spend half... in usa i dont think they have the same situation.) and dont forget the private school, did you know the expenses that an american has to bear to allow his son to be graduated? 200.000 $
you have not to pay some crazy figure/sum to receive a medical treatment in italy, there are tickets that let you to be seen by a doctor paying only a minimum part of the entire cost borne for the most part by the state, by all of us...

welfare state...!!!!!!!! about this matter we could talk for hours... but you realize the huge nonsense you said?

i dont know why you are talking this way, you must be a daughter from a rich family, ( i dont want to dare to tell that you are spoiled but someone could think that according to what you wrote)

without welfare state everyone, apart from some fithy rich people, would be , not poor, poverty-stricken.

we wouldnt afford to pay for a basic service like catching the train....
at the most i might agree with you if you refer to the charitable state that is not a right solution to the problems that for example we have in south italy, or if you say that welfare state doesnt work as it should.. but not that it shouldnt exist!
bye.

There has been a plan in place by a secret society (filthy rich people) for over the last 30 years to dumb down america and make it a 2nd world country and make all the 3rd world countries 2nd world countries so we are all 2nd world countries. Depending on where you live this could be good or bad.

It is a flawed comparison. For example, poverty in the USA is a very high quality of life compared with middle or upper class in some countries. All of your "facts" are similarly misconstrued.

You're an idiot. Nobody has free education or health care. Someone is paying for it, i.e., the taxpayer.

Here we do have free public education, by the way. 13 percent poverty rate is not high.

We have the highest GNP of any nation, and we're similar to third-world countries in no way. What's good about having a welfare state? And corruption in Government is everywhere!

Most of the above is the trade-off for hardly paying any taxes compared to the rest of the industrialised world. It's called "swings and roundabouts"...
