So I've heard all this stuff about how bad a Ouija board is and how it can attract spirits, and I've also heard that they're fake and a childs toy. Does anybody have an educated guess, in relative terms anyway, as to what could happen if someone were to use a Ouija board in a church?

Oh good grief! I'm so tired of people trying to build a bonfire with a wet match.

One of the things I did while still lecturing at churches was to demonstrate a Ouija board.
While I controlled the planchette there were no untoward incidents. When there was a person who tried to "make things exciting" as one person stated after I asked him to stop trying to spell Satan and he admitted he had thought of Satan, but didn't know he was physically forcing the planchette so much it was tilting.

He actually admitted that he wanted the board to show evil, when the pastor asked him, "before God."

On the other hand there was a matriarch of a Church that sat opposite of me and asked her question. We waited for the planchette to move and the pastor made notes. The planchette was really attuned to her. We barely touched the planchette and a few letters then series of numbers were pointed out. It was the date of the first time she had been kissed by her deceased husband. She asked if she could buy the board, so I gave it to her as a gift.

The Catholic Church doesn't say they don't believe in ghosts. But who the ghosts are is an issue. We have no need to contact spirits, we only need to contact God and those in heaven through prayer. Using tarot cards and ouija boards is an attempt to know the supernatural through other means besides God. This is the danger. The supernatural does exist and has both good and evil. Using such tools can invite evil into your life, and take you in a direction away from God. That is why the Church says we should not use them. Also, the Bible says that divination is a sin. Ouija boards, tarot cards, fortune telling, mediums etc. all fall into this category.

Depends.

Ouija boards can be bad news, they are also a kids toy.

Bit of paradox, eh? It really isn't. The Ouija board is a tool, like pendulums, or scrying crystals, or even staring into a candle flame. Its a tool for contacting and communicating with spirits. What is really important are the people who are using those tools.

Most of the times nothing bad happens, sometimes nothing happens, sometimes something really nasty happens...most of the stories I've heard from folks screwing around with the occult and it bites them in the *** starts with "We were screwing around with a Ouija board and..."

So just keep that in mind, it's all really about the people using it, and attitudes, and whatnot...it's not the damn boards...

in my church, we speak with 'spirit' all the time. Many of us have other methods, i.e. tarot, pendulums. But we don't use these in church. We cultivate pure spirit communication. We don't necessarily think these things are 'bad', but they aren't the pure, mind to mind communication we are seeking.

Not sure why ouija boards have such a bad rap, but crystals and other things are ok. Psychics believe they are too open to ANY spirit and can therefore be negative.

If you do use one what I always did was say "God protect me from any evil spirits or entities" Then I make the sign of the cross I ask my Grandmother to come through then I will ask who is on the board? It spells out Grandma, I then say "to make sure it's you Grandma What was your middle name? OR where were you born? " If the answers are wrong I will not get on the board, that happend maybe 3 times in all the years I have done it on and off, my Grandma always gets on, I'll ask her a certain question she will spell out the information.
It is like everything in life educate yourself before jumping into it.

DON T DO IT! A friend and I did so in the 80s on the steps of a church (and previously, with a group of friends in an abandoned church). We asked the usual questions (I m guessing), like "When will we die" and "how" and then asked "Do you like us?" It responded no. We asked why; it answered, "vandals" (we d been TP ing earlier). Again, 17 and stupid / out for some harmless fun. Then I do not remember what we asked, but we then saw a little bright red lightning bolt come from the board to the planchette, and my friend felt a jolt of electricity. We were so freaked out, that we didn t bother to say "goodbye" but got up and ran to her car and drove to someplace where we both felt safe. I don t know about her, but I ve felt for years that my prayers have been intercepted and used to torment me (demonic), but have had no paranormal experiences. I have told my children* these stories, and even warned their friends that I better NEVER hear of any of them messing with one. *P.S. if you think this is a children s toy, you are wicked. Do not let children anywhere near one of these things.

I have used on (at home). I will tell you my experience and let you make up your mind from there.

My sister and I used hers for a while. After several weeks of play, she got to the point that she could use the board by herself. The plantar did not move slow, it moved very fast. And to test her, she would wear a blindfold and none of the words in the sentences were ever misspelled.

I used it once, by myself, and did not misspell any words either. But it was much slower for me than for her (I was blindfolded too).

One night, a few of her friends were over and they held a seance. A few minutes into it, there was a commotion coming from the from. I opened the door and saw several horrified girls in the room all watching my sister use the board.

I do not know what the question was, but the answer was:

"I am Satan. I am going to kill you" repeating over and over again.

She NEVER picked it up again.

Evil spirits are all they are. They know all about you and your family. They will tell you anything you want to hear. When you die you go to either heaven or hell. So has to be evil spirit!

i dont know it would depend what kind of spirits you are trying to contact... i wouldn't advise using it in a church.... but if your trying to contact GOD... thats not the way.... but you can talk to other spirits just be careful with who you talk to and be sure to say goodbye before you put it away...
