People stutter for a few reasons. Sometimes it is caused by some problem with the speech centers of the brain. But more often it is caused by anxiety in speaking. Many people who stutter do not stutter when alone, when singing, when reading aloud, or when they do not feel anxious.

Children sometimes stutter when they are developing speech.

You should not point out that someone stutters. Do not correct or finish sentences for stutterers -- it only serves to make them stutter more and will not help them to stop stuttering.

There are some aural (the ear) implants that stop stuttering. Some people benefit from speech therapy.

I guess people could list things all day long why a person stutters, but from someone who has stuttered since they began talking, it's a mystery to me. I know at one year old I wasn't " afraid " to speak, so fear doesn't seem to be a factor. I wish I knew what caused my stuttering but I may never find out for sure. I've tried speech therapy for years with 6 or 8 different therapists and even bought a Speech Easy device that goes in my ear. No luck. As for what people say about not trying to finish words for stutters, go ahead and help all you can. I know in my case I really appreciate it because some words can seem almost impossible at times. well, that's my 2 cents worth.

What causes stuttering? There are four factors most likely to contribute to the development of stuttering: genetics ( approximately 60% of those who stutter have a family member who does also); child development (children with other speech and language problems or developmental delays are more likely to stutter); neurophysiology ( recent research has shown that people who stutter process speech and language in different areas of the brain than those who do not stutter); and family dynamics ( high expectations and fast-paced lifestyles can contribute to stuttering).

Stuttering may occur when a combination of factors comes together and may have different causes in different people. It is probable that what causes stuttering differs from what makes it continue or get worse.

Multiple problems it would seem at this stage associated with the speech (not singing) centres of the brain and the tension that develops in the vocal chords and the tongue as a concommitant result.
Stutterers sing without stuttering of course. This proves that singing circumvents the speech centres whether through design or because music wires itself in another way in the brain isn't known. I would opt for the explanation that music is not routed through speech centres of the brain; it has its own conduits and wires which whilst not crossing into speech centres can and do interract with them at times. Take Rap guys....they really can't sing but they take speech and musically modulate it somewhat. But if they try both conterminously and simultaneously it would take some doing on their part. Its like some people who whilst eating want to desperately articulate something. The urgency to speak sends the wrong signals to the pillar of fauces and the epiglottis. They choke.

After all these years, researchers are still not positive. It is believed that it is neurological. Some people only stutter when they are nervous. In some cases, children who stutter go through speech therapy and are totally cured.Strangely, many who stutter badly are able to sing, act, talk to pets, and whisper without stuttering at all.
