Do you believe this statement is true?
"In a liberals mind, minorities are a group of people that can not make it on their own, a people that needs the assistant of liberals, through government, to come out of poverty. A group of people that should be graded on a whole different scale. Whether its affirmative action(handicap points?) or in behavioral problems, minorities are held to a lower standard."

I think that a lot of liberals believe this to some degree. I am not a true liberal, but I am a democrat and lean to the left and I believe that everyone can help themselves. For instance, I ***** and complain about my job everyday, but I went to college for a little while and got it all paid for because i was poor (yes its true to the conservatives, poor whites get entitlements as well), so the bottom line is, I could have been a doctor, lawyer, engineer or whatever, but i chose not to finish and now i am at a blue collar job. My point to this is, that anyone can be anything the wanna be. I think most liberals just believe that sometimes you need a helping hand and deserve to not be discriminated against. So its a little of both, but overall, I think liberals know that minorities can be comeptent given a FAIR shake.

NO! Liberals realize that there are people in this country that for whatever reason (ie drug infested neighborhoods, male figures in jail, death in family, economic oppression) need help. It doesnt matter what the race is, liberals believe that there should be plenty of government programs available to help those who cannot do it on their own. It is a horrible thing that any person any race, should have to live in poverty with no end in sight and there should be a way for families whether minority or majority to get out of poverty with help. I think liberals realize that there are challenges that minorities face that others don't. Either way, conservatives don't really care about anything other than their own bottomline.

No.

Affirmative Action does NOT lower any standards as claimed by AA opponents. AA basically makes a person in position say"I have three qualified candidates for one position. Since hey are equally qualified, the woman or the minority will get the position". Why. because for centuries, these same groups were denied positions even if they were better qualified than their competition. This doe NOT equate to a lower standard. This DOES equate to discrimination to undo the damage caused by discrimination.

As for liberals believing that minorities can not make it on their own, I don't think that is the case. In sheer numbers minorities are NOT the majority of social program recipients. Racists of other cultures would have people to believe so. Within the minority community there is a larger portion of them on social programs, yet blacks comprise approx 12% of the US population. To think that 12% of the nation are 100% of the problem is simply ludicrous.

Liberals suffer from a condition called "emphathy". They suffer when they see others who suffer. As did Jesus.

No. The only reason for affirmative action as far as I am concerned is to level the playing field a bit. A simple example to prove my point. Old money is generally White money. That means that these folks vacation together, country club together, Paris together, Harvard together, golf together, marry each other. My daddy will hire Buffy and your daddy will hire Chip so to speak. From hundreds of years of discrimination, minorities have a lot of catching up to do and affirmative action assists in this. Are they less capable? Absolutely NOT! They may be more so because they are not relying on Daddy's $$$ to accomplish their goals. By the way, I am liberal.

I don't agree with the statement entirely, since it attributes a characteristic to an entire mass of people. There are some traditional Libs who believe that government should promote the general welfare, not necessarily provide the specific individual welfare.

There are, however, many big time liberals who live their political life according to the principle of that statement. One whos come to mind is John Kerry, who said during a speech which included a statistic about more blacks in prison than in college. “That’s unacceptable, but it’s not their fault,”

Damn, who's statement is that?!
I make up my own mind and many of the decisions haven't been good ones. I have made many good decisions but I don't need some suit wearing moron "speaking" for me. My family came out of poverty on hard work and pursuing higher education.... without the help of the government :)

"minorities are a group of people that can not make it on their own" No, its called the self-fulfilling prophecy, and they believe that they cant help themselves

"through government, to come out of poverty" You cant help people who dont want to help themselves,,,

"minorities are held to a lower standard" That is sometimes true though...

but altogether, no I dont agree.

No,I think that statement is false. That's the new way of the right to try to stop efforts to bring obvious and less obvious forms of discrimination to the light and where necessary take legislative initiatives to end that discrimination.
That's the mindset of those people who say there is no racism anymore in America, there is no discrimination.
It should come as no surprise idea's like that are most often expressed by white straight males.

I do, I do and I do
I'm sorry, it looks as if I'm agreeing with the statement. That is not the case. It's the absolute opposite. I'm agreeing that libs see minorities the way you described and they are WRONG

PS here is a something that I recently wrote:

I'm as simple as you want me to be,
and as complicated as you want to make me be.
I'm as tuff as nails so they say,
with a heart softer then jell .
I love classical music but I can't sing,
and I love to paint in oil especially the sea
I'm a staunch conservative surrounded by libs
and some of them are part of my family .
I love my family, friends, neighbors and, yes the All Mighty God
and for all of you and me I pray a lot

that's silly...

the only basis for that remark is that liberals actually HELP minorities...

conservatives haven't pushed a bill to help minorities since the 60s!

and now they say "helping" is apparently "enabling"...

it would be like seeing a dying man on the street and going "if I help him, it's only going to make him weaker. If he was meant to live... he wouldn't need my help"... which is the basic conservative attitude in America today...

they have ZERO concern for other Americans... they only care about themselves... and use the PATHETIC excuse of "if you help people, they won't help themselves" to hide in their own greed and laziness...
