The best way I can explain is that the people are real people (as in, not actors playing characters) but the situations they are in are scripted.

I heard the Hills was scripted. I always thought that they werent acting.. but I think reality tv has just gotten out of hand. I think at first the cameras followed these people around and really taped their real life.. but now if you dont want a shot to be put on tv.. they will reshoot the shot and put that one on. Which doenst make sense! People want to see the real deal and not something that has to be taken over and over.. because then its not real anymore! And knowing that these cameras are on you 24/7, you can "act" however you want even if there arent any second takes.. and it not be real!

hardly any reality shows are actually reality. maybe Cops is one. the other ones have a bunch of stupid teenagers that can't say anything interesting so the producer gives them a script to follow, if they can. even a show like survivor, which isn't scripted, the producers still have to show a kind of narrative among the participants, so they ask them certain questions to feed the storyline.

They are all scripted in one way or another. It started out with the original Survivor. They made 2 of the contestants seem to get romantically linked. There has got to be some kind of "pay off",or great ending,or the networks aren't gonna buy it. Plus they can't put just any spur-of-the-moment incident on the air for fear of offending or boring someone. And it has to be edited for TV.

Scripted reality show: it means the show is written based on reality, but it's still fake.

It's scripted to mimic an actual reality show that is unscripted.
Why?
This way the network doesn't have to pay the actors nearly as much because they really don't have to act very well.

Yeah its like what Corey D. said. Its like YOU play on the show ,but they give you a script .
I can't stand reality shows and it seems that each one they come out with gets dumber and dumber . They rank with the infomercials. Just a waste of tv time .
Just look at this list of reality shows all over the world

Some of these Reality Shows have the participants reenact conversations and such for purposes of lighting and of course dramatic effect. However NONE of those reality shows will admit it. They all claim to be REAL REALITY but im sure almost all of them film situations that benefit the viewing audience.
I love Reality but I take it for what it is ENTERTAINMENT! That's my thoughts....Thanks for Asking!
