Sounds like you might have gotten scammed - the phone being disconnected is NOT a good sign. If you sent them any money for fees, don't expect to see it again - and it's very possible that the check is bogus. Take it to a local bank - if it's bogus though, they might or might not be able to tell right away, so if you deposit it, don't spend any of it for a few weeks.

A disconnected number screams scam. Take it to a local Bank of America branch to see if it is real. Also, get a copy of your credit report - someone may be trying to steal your identity.
