Earlier this year, Bush promised that if Iraq told us we should leave, then we would get out of there. Today, Paul Harvey reported that three major studies were conducted independently of each other, to size up the attitudes and feelings of the Iraqi people. All three studies found that at this point, 47% of Iraqis want us to leave -- NOW!!

If that number gets to be over 50%, Bush can either do the honorable thing (don't hold your breath!) and get all of our troops OUT of there, on the spot. Or he can break his promise, and thus, once **again**, prove to everyone that his word isn't worth a fried rat turd. Which one do YOU think he'll do, if the Iraqis tell us to leave?

To "kylekuypers" -- This may strain your brain somewhat (one needs to be gentle when dealing with today's breed of "conservatives"), but you may recall that there was a time when Iraqis were happy to have us there, but now 47% want us OUT of there -- NOW. Look up the word, "trend," and you'll see that this is LEADING to a majority. Probably very soon.

And -- Bush DID say, in so many words, that we WOULD get out if Iraq asked us to. No matter how much you may wish to believe otherwise. (Isn't it nice that you cons have a majority of sensible and intelligent liberals in society to help keep you honest?)

To "Brian" -- a few weeks ago, the Iraqi president told us that we could leave whenever we wanted to. That's the next-best thing to a direct request or demand. If Bush were **intelligent**, he would have ACTED on that!

To "christopherc" -- Supposedly, we're in Iraq to "democratize" the place. But you say that the will of the PEOPLE over there "isn't worth a cent." Interesting. So much for democracy.

To "tx_trotter95" -- The studies Paul Harvey cited were reputable and substantive. I wasn't fast enough on my note-taking to make a list of them. But I'll bet they can be found via Google in a day or two.

I believe he meant the Iraqi government. It is kind of foolish to rule based on polls, isn't it? Oh wait that's how Clinton ran his Presidency............

Two distinct point are raised here. The first of course centers on whether the Iraqi 'government' is a truely independent entity or simply a US policy construct...a 'Vichy Iraq' face on a US occupation. The second centers on how much real influence the people of Iraq have on 'their' government. Probably not much. Here in the US we elected a congress with at least a shadow of a mandate to get us out of Iraq....congress hasn't acted and most likely won't. They could simply refuse to introduce a bill to fund the war the next time that comes around.....no bill...no vote...the cash cow goes away and the occupation ends. As the first President Bush once said, "Isn't gonna' happen...wouldn't be prudent." My feeling is that this occupation will become institutionalized much like the 'Cold War' except people will be killed and maimed until Iraq reaches such a low equilibrium of civil life that it will simply cease to exist. By then massive debt and the support of a bloated military will have sent the USA down the same sad road as the USSR....broke, listless, overrun by various mafias....a Mad Max world. Please tell me I'm wrong....but I just don't think I am!

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Bush to stick to his promise. He will find an excuse, as he always has.

What I don't get are all the responses criticizing the results of the poll. Are you aware of what a poll is? It determines the way THE PEOPLE feel about something. Are you aware of what a democracy is? Here is a quick definition from wikipedia:

The fundamental features of democracies include government based on majority rule and the consent of the governed...

What is the preamble of the Constitution?

"We the people..."

Some of you have been so brainwashed by this administration that big government always knows best and always has our best interests in mind. Meanwhile you vilify former democratic presidents because they actually represented the people and had high approval ratings. Does any of this make sense?

No, not coming soon.

What is here now is another chance for you to acknowledge that the President is Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, that situations in war can change, and that the commander must make decisions based on the current situation and objective.

Apparently Liberals don't know How stupid they look when they post questions like this . One of the MANY weaknesses of the Liberals is to put so much emphases on polls ! When it comes to protecting our Country Republican Presidents don't care about unfavorable poll Numbers He Dose what ever it takes to protect the USA .This is top priority! But a Liberal Democrat President bases every decision he makes on poll numbers . Jimmy Carter and Clinton would both have given in to Terrorist letting them Destroy America before they would even think of going to war which is no less a horrible decision to have to make. Especially when you know you are going to have to hear or read this kind of Liberal garbage. So Shut up about it .And yes you do look stupid by asking questions like this! You are the one who is NOT telling the truth. But that's why you are a Liberal!

Iraqi government's request would probably be honored. A bunch of polls that truly aren't worth a cent isn't how governmental decisions should be conducted. You might want to tell your heroes in congress that before they flip flop on an other agenda again.

So, according to the Con stooges above, the Iraqi Government (of "three month vacation in the middle of a civil war" fame) is The Decider?

Fabulous, the fate of my country is in the hands of al-Maliki. I guess you Cons are fine with that.

Like Bush is the only politician that lies and breaks promises.-
I believe finding an honest man or woman (for that matter) on Capitol Hill would be like finding that proverbial needle in the haystack.

I think that George Bush will do what General Petraeus (sp?) recommends- that would be the smart thing to do.

Any word on whether the studies think it is going to rain?

Here now--- another inane rant, proving that just because you own a computer doesn't mean you should use it!

BTW, Iraq in the sense that our President used it in, meant the government. Polls are as meaningless over there as they are here.
