A religious cult thought their leader was the true second christ, but he was only a mentally ill man who told them they'd all be better off in heaven, so they laced the cool aid with arsnic, so even the kids would drink it and they all died, thinking God told them to.
A few tried to escape, but were caught and made to drink.
It's just one of those things where people followed their faith to the end.

I'm not as familiar - perhaps reading it yourself - or here is a link that might simplify it.

I think the previous responder is confusing your "Jamestown" with the "Jonestown" events of the 1970's.
