Can full-size BBQs use the 16 oz canisters?

All full-size BBQs come with a hose and regulator to hook up to a 20 lb tank. But can you also use the 16 oz bottles directly? When your big tank runs out, it would be nice to do this and better than having a full 2nd tank lying around.

I don't think the threads will fit. 16 oz containers have fine threads while grills have a coarse, reverse (left handed) thread.
