A friend of mine says her dentist will not allow her to go back to the dental examining room with her kids. They "make" her stay in the waiting room. The kids are back there for way longer than needs be. She's wondering about the laws involving children under 18. (They are only 10 and 12)

Also, what are the laws about dr appts. and going in with your child? Thanks!

If they are minors, they cannot keep the parent from going in with them. It is for the medical safety for the children. I would let them know that I would speak to the medical/dental board regarding that issue and see what they have to say. She could also file a complaint with them.

Many dentist do not allow the parents in the examining room.
Its a cramped small space and the kids act worse when the parents are in the room with them. Thats why they have dental assistants.
If a female patient is being examined by a male doctor, the nurse is always present.
At our hospital, parents are not allowed a lot of places.
Some places mommie and daddy just do not go. Fact of life.
If they could accompany their child everywhere, it would just be a fiasco.
Recently, I had a patients who mother and aunt wanted to go into the operating room NOT! We have people who want to call recovery to speak with their relatives post operative. NOT!!
I was familiar with the dentist who my children were examined by and he did not want me in the examining room and I never had a problem with it. The dental assistant was there. I would have just been in the way.
Some parents just get ridiculous.

The laws regarding this are very simple. If the patient is a minor (most states under 18, sometimes under 16) the parents are allowed to fully participate in their children's care. Period.

This dentist is absolutely out of line. There is no reason for her to comply with his requests.

You didnt say what state...
However they probably cannot give any type of medical or dental treatment. I know it is boring but that is one of teh joys of being a parent.
