I've found after having Norton on my laptop for about 6 months, that it's got gradually slower. Is this something that Norton causes, or is it just my laptop?

Yeah Norton is power hungry, if I get a computer with Norton on it first thing I do is get rid of it normally by using a Norton removal tool, as it can be a bugger to get rid of! I put the link at the bottom if you want to remove it permanently.
I use Panda antivirus and firewall 2008, have used Panda for about 4 years, it runs nicely in the background and doesn't seem to slow things down. It has a free trial download of the full suite, the links at the bottom, there are many very good suites that seem to run well, Norton is one of the worst. Just check the ratings of different security suites before trying one, there are some bad ones, link for one virus comparison below.

Yes! Norton is a highly resource intensive program. That is to say it uses a lot of your computers memory when in use meaning that the rest of laptop's functions will have less memory to and thus the system will be slower.

I personally do not use Norton for that very reason. Instead I am protected from viruses by McAfee VirusScan and use the integrated Windows XP firewall. On top of this I use Ad-Aware and Windows Defender to prevent Ad/Spyware infections.

If are really having problems with your laptop's speed then I think your best bet is to remove Norton. Have a look in the security section of http://www.download.com for more information of possible alternatives.

Hope this Helps!

I had Norton for over a year. I didn't notice it slowing down my system but it did start crashing my computer when it would try to run a virus scan. I had to un-install it and switch to a different anti-virus program. This is not the first time or computer that I have had problems with Norton, but it will be the last.

Norton is a type of spyware in reality. It runs in the background and takes up memory and CPU. Could be Norton. I removed it from my computer. Virsus are so old school. If you are going to get anything from the internet it will be adware or spyware. With there are a number of good programs that will get rid of that. www.adaware.com is a good program. I use that and run a scan once a week. I havent gotten a virus in a long time, but i will get about 100 spyware/adware files a week. In todays internet world most virsus will come from downloading peer to peer like lime wire, imesh and all the others out there. And also from torrent files. But they are very unlikely. Find an spyware/adware remover program and see if that works for ya.

Yes. What it does is constantly scan all files, not just your new and regularly used ones. This uses more memory, thus slowing down your computer. But as for safety, i think it is top notch. I was nearly invaded by nastys three times last week and it dealt with each quickly and safely. There is one called 'AVAST' which you can download for free if you wanted to give it a try. It comes from eastern europe, but you have to uninstall your entire Norton. I tried it but had nothing but grief. Wouldn't be my first choice. Have you tried a total clean out in your performance and maintenance. Or tried to restrict the flow of temporary internet files. That bogs mine down.

I have heardthis.. I have Norton and my desk top tends to be slow. Some days a lot worse than others. Have tried deleting temp files and histories. Deleting old E mails . Deleted unused programmes. Edited what is in the start up and have speeded up a bit . Have to leave all the security on all the time so it probably is part of the trouble.

AHHHH! YES!!! Norton is the worst anti-virus software.
Switch to Kaspersky.

Norton is flashy, patronizing and a HUGE system resource hog... Norton is the AOL of Anti-Virus.

You will notice a HUGE productivity boost switching from Norton to Kasperky.

yes any program that runs in the background will slow your computer. I had norton and hated it because of how slow it made my computer. There are lighter and better programs out there for free.
