I was told that if I live in a different county then where the court hearing is at then the subpoena has to be handed to me directly and one by certified mail is not valid.

Also if I was notified of the subpoena but do not sign for it can I still get into trouble for not appearing in court?

A subpoena can be delivered by certified mail. Signing for the letter is proof of being served.

Aside from the other responses, you can also be served by publication, (if at work) by the process server leaving the subpoena with a person with 'apparant' authority or if someone is at home, a person also with 'apparant' authority.

You do not have to be 'handed' a subpoena in any state or county.

You can be served in person or by certified mail. Either way is legit, which means you have to appear.
