According to the Haynes Repair Manual for 1982 thru 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier it has a speedometer cable and they contain complete guides on how to replace it . It is NOT electronic as everyone says.

It is electronic. If the problem is with the gauge you will have to send the complete instrument cluster to an authorized repair center. Contact your local Chevrolet dealer to find out the proper procedures in your area. Usually they replace it with a rebuilt cluster with your mileage put into it. Maybe cost around $200-$300?

It uses a speed sensor that is located in the end of the transmission. It sends a digital pulse to a speed sensor buffer that decodes the digital signal into an analog signal which the PCM and the instrument cluster can use.
