Two modems would require two phone/DSL lines, one for each.
You can't connect two modems to the same line simultaneously. You share that one line by using a router.
Look closely at your modem before you buy anything. Most DSL modems seem to come with a lot of router functions built in. You probably won't have to buy anything extra.

No, you must use a router. The specific model of router you get doesn't matter, and there isn't usually much of a price difference between wired-only routers and wireless routers, so I'd get the wireless one. The wireless signal can be disabled if you don't need that feature at the moment, yet you can turn it on in the future. Most of the major brands you'll encounter are Linksys, Belkin, Netgear, and D-Link. I personally have had the least amount of problems with D-Link, but they're all pretty cheaply made and defects do happen.

You need a router
Two modems will not work, one will run the other will not be activated.
There are several router makers; I presume you want inexpensive low end household grade routers. These will likely meet your need. All are about the same in performance - and probably ok for your needs. Check with your local supplier to see what he has and what he suggests.
Regardless of which you buy, plan on upgrading the firmware to the latest one available on the maker's web site.

You can only have one modem connected at a time. So you will need a router.
