What advice would you give to them?

As far as I can see it makes people worse.

I used to use one my self until I realised the unreality of it was destructive. And I have no problems (as far as I know)lol. But I have seen it's effect on personality.

Frankie I did say as far as I know. But I do know that I'm a stable person in my life and I think that's a positive guide. Everyone has times when they are vulnerable and I have had my times.

I think you are right grumbles, chat rooms are destructive places in general. People have a lowered threshold of care and are willing to shoot off rockets that they would consider cruel in person. The cut and thrust can be hard to withstand emotionally even if you have a good sense of personal worth.

I think it is indiciative of the situation with mental distress that you end up with a lot of time on your hands and precious little company. The mind can spin and one can be drawn back to the apparent imediacy of an interface with individuals who will not judge you, or at least whose judgement you dont have to stare in the face . There is also the element of psuedo community which those with mental distress can lack in a more authentic way (our fault not theirs, we are responsible for their marginalisation )

There are of course a million different interpretations of mental health problems ,which are unique to a million individuals, so there is no genuine answer to your question

Firstly I have to say I know that however any one else has picked this up Mrsb wasnt saying people with mental health problems should or should not be in chat rooms.

But I too have noted the amount of ppl I regularly talk to have depression issues..one in particular was sacked from work as he couldnt keep awake...yet he was on line at 2/3am in the morning writing emails!

Everyone is different and the world would be boring in the least if all were the same..but social interaction is necessary not just chat rooms (I have learnt that if you turn off your puter life still moves on)

My guess is that the chat rooms provide them with the opportunity to be social, and yet anonymous at the same time. They can meet people with little to no effort. They can find people who think similarly to the way they think. The can ask questions and advice from people they would normally never come into contact with. It has it's positives and negatives, nothing's perfect, but it's something. And, they are not monitored completely, so they can be a little less inhibited and let down their feelings of insecurity, pretend to be someone other than themselves. It's a double edged sword, I think.
My advice would be to be careful, and not say or do anything you wouldn't want on the news that evening. And for the love of GOD, please don't use them to prey on people, just keep your narcissistic tendencies to yourself.

Perhaps they have no contact with the outside world so a chat room is safe? I would tell anyone that there is a big wide world out there and that chat rooms are OK but should play only a small part in ones life.

It is easier for a person with mental problems to communicate behind a barrier like the internet. In real life people judge others very quickly but on the internet no one knows the difference.

Chat rooms are the only place where the level of conversation is so low, that anyone of any mental ability can take part. They provide a useful service so why complain about them?

Are people who frequent chat rooms (or most, anyhow) just normal Joe Publics who put on a much retarded attitude to get whatever it is out of their system...as most of us - or them - know they couldnae act like this to each other at work, or on the 20:19 to Leicester, etc.

Too much time on the computer can give many health problems. There is still a stigma attached to mental illness so I think a lot of people tend not to seek the help they need.

I think most people are just plain lonely and it gives them a place to meet and socialize.. now mind you its not the best place and it can be destructive.. but that is not how they see it unless its too late..
