I always thought a cob was a type of horse.

It is just a way to say the web is no longer occupied.
Spider webs are clean and in use and should be left intact.
Once the spider dies or moves on, the web will collect dust and then people call it a cobweb.

Cob - male swan
Welsh Cob - a breed of pony
Cob nut - nuts from a hazel tree
Cob - a traditional mud wall mainly built in Devon UK

a cob is what grains of corn grow on, thus , a corn cob.
used in early days as toilet paper phrase =rougher than a cob!
web and cob are not compatable as I can see.

ever see a corn cob without the corn kernels? those interlocking spaces resemble the look of a cobweb.
