All non profit groups survive on money like donations. Most groups work out of some sort of building which requires rent/mortgage and utility payments at the least.
So no, they would not be able to function with out money.

Nope. That's why it's called 'organized'. When the Christianity movement first began, the followers sold all they had, gave it to the church and depended on each other for survival.
