I have to have installed a breathalyzer in my car, and the information says it ranges from $50 to $500. does anyone know how they base the fee?

It is likely one is installation fee and the other monthly rental fee, but it depends on where you live and how the programs are set up.

Where I live the installation/de-installation fee is paid upfront and runs a few hundred dollars and then there is a monthly fee of $60/per month rental fee for the equipment for the duration of the probation or whatever term is determined by the Court.

Where you live it could be possible that the fees are based on a sliding scale according to income; the only way to know for sure is ask your probation officer.

To the above poster that asked why one would have to be installed, it is because of an OWI/DUI offense. Nearly all states have manditory license suspension for a period of time (not something the the Court can waive, it is state law) and in order to accommodate people who do not have access to public transportation and the person is a first time offender, it allows them to have a probationary lisence where they are allowed to drive to work and back and medical & rehab treatment only with the caveat that they MUST have a breathalyzer installed in their vehicle so there is no way they can drink and drive during that period.

If the breathalyzers detects alcohol on the person's breath the ignition system is disabled (the person has to blow into a tube in order to start the car).

I would assume the age of the car- if there is a lockout on the starter in place (since if there isn't this adds to the cost and could be bypassed otherwise) - but it all depends on how much overhaul is needed.

If you have a car that needs a chip in the key to start it I would assume it is alot cheaper to hook the breathalizer into that system compared to a car that did not already have a lockout mechanism.

This is not a "fee". This is the cost of the breathalyzer and its installation.

depends on the shop that puts it in. Find a list of places that do the install.
