I once worked with a woman who found it appalling that i did not celebrate Halloween with my children. I don't believe in Santa Clause either, but I do celebrate Christmas ( we celebrate is as Christ's birthday). I celebrate Thanksgiving as our family being thankful for God's blessings ( not for the whole Quacker and Pilgrims stuff....because of what history suggest that happened to the American Indians back then)

In other words, I do allow my children to go to the mall on Halloween and collect candy and maybe get their face painted or something, just to simply let them enjoy the day. However, I teach my children the truth about holidays and their meanings so that when their older, they can decide to celebrate them or not with their children.......why does this seem to make me such a bad parent to some people?

Oh, I don't know. Sounds like you're letting them have some fun, which I think is the most important thing for the kids. And serving your conscience at the same time. I don't see anything inherently wrong with this, sounds like you're finding a good balance.

It sounds to me like you are celebrating all of those holidays, your just celebrating them in your own way. It sounds like you are celebrating Halloween with the kids by letting them Trick or Treat at the mall, and celebrating Christmas as Christ's birthday and Thanksgiving as a day to give thanks to God are pretty traditional ways. It sounds like your co-worker is more into the commercial side of the holidays and you are celebrating God and doing things together as a family. Good for you! And good for you to educate your children! I think this makes you a great parents.

Hope this helps and I hope you will check out some of my questions that I need answers too. Thanks!

Many parents chose to lie to their kids about santa until some of the kids are practically teenagers, so that whenever another parent refuses to go along with this lie, it is seen as a challenge to their parental authority and also challenges their belief and parenting system.

Also the truth of Christmas is not that it is Christ birthday, Christmas is really the winter solstice, and to help convert pagans, the christian church made Christmas out of the holiday, the theory being that when pagans celebrate winter solstice they will instead be celebrating Christmas, ironically it worked just like st patricks day. Also because of calendar differences though not now on the same day, historically the church moved all saints day to the same day as halloween for similar reasons as they made christmas.

Additionally just like santa most christmas traditions are of pagan origins, like the tree, red balls on the tree, yule log, and mistletoe.

I do admire your bravery at refusing to lie to your kids about santa, and also for not celebrating halloween.

I can relate. tell them to raise their own children. Christmas isn't biblical, Christ people didn't celebrate birthdays, and he wasn't born in December. Halloween is a harvest celebration.
do what you feel right with your own children it's your right.

When my kids started asking about Halloween being of the devil & crap I explained the meanings of it to them, and let them decide. We just celebrate it "Commercially" with hayrides and parties and creepy music.. I have never outgrown my love of Halloween. Do whatever makes YOU comfortable, do not worry about the opinions of others

What's wrong with Halloween? Ghosts, Goblins, Skeletons, what fun! Sounds biblical to me!

I see nothig wrong with your ideals,at least your letting them enjoy the day like other children do and if they are old enough to understand your reasoning then I say to each their own!>=)
