If you do not have any other Firewall installed (which might be responsible for turning off Windows Firewall), chances are you have already ben infected by a Trojan or a Virus that has installed a 'root kit' and your PC is now 'owned' by some-one else.

If that's the case - you have been running without a Firewall - you will need to inspect your PC for infection anyway - so even if your don't have a root kit infection chances are you have something nasty ...

If it is a root kit infection, I would burn all my data files (holiday photo's etc) to DVD, check I have the original install CD's (Windows, drivers etc) and then remove and destroy the hard drive (before installing a replacement). Before inserting ANY media created by the old PC, make sure you have 'auto-run' disabled.

Hi,
If you have Norton security this will have turned your windows firewall off. If you go to your Security Center and click on Firewall you should see a message there "at least one of your firewalls is turned on" or "your Norton firewall is operative". EITHER of these messages means you are protected. good luck.

Do you have a third party firewall running? if so it might have disabled the windows firewall. If you do have one, then you won't need the windows one anyway. By the way, the windows firewall is rubbish by any standards.

i have had this problem, does it happen on startup? and
does it work sometimes and other times it doesnt? it could
be hardware related like something in windows didnt load
properly or something with the registry. Try this just in case
