Bobbi, your heart is golden. However, there are players that take the risk for the hundreds who are compensated for their courage every year. It is unfortunate that tight end Kevin Everett won't be playing for Buffalo again, but recall New England's Darryl Stingley being hit by Oakland's Jack Tatum over 30 years ago.

One argument the players have for getting paid so much is the injury factor. When players strap their pads on and tape up, they are responsible for their actions. Don't you think boxing or other striking sports are more dangerous than football?

College coach Joe Tiller (Purdue) sits the safety committee for the NCAA, and he was really perturbed at the NCAA's decision to move kickoffs back to the 30 for teeing up. He knows that injuries happen most on special teams plays like kickoffs. The difference is that NFL players are compensated for their risk while most Division I NCAA players are only HOPING they make the pros. I do think the college game should be deliberately less dangerous than the pros.

Take care.

Obviously we don't want football players to have serious injuries like the one you noted, however, these types of injuries are so rare they happen only once every few years. Given the number of hits that are delivered each year, and the resulting number of spinal cord injuries, i would say that football is not getting too dangerous in that regard. I would go so far as to say it's relatively safe (as far as spinal injuries that is). The statistics support that.

as a former player that played with 2 players that are permanently paralyzed from broken vertabraes I know how dangerous the game can be. I pray that he recovers fully. that being said a lot of injuries could be avoided by good technique. Many of these injuries are caused by hitting with the head down vs hitting with the face mask. I haven't seen the footage on how this guy got hurt yet though.

Football is a dangerous sport. It is, has been, and always will be.

I feel for the guy, as I'm only a few hours away from Buffalo, I respect their team, their players, coaches, and fans. I'm not a fan of the Bills, but either way, it's an unfortunate situation.

However, typical football knowledge tells you not to lead with your head, especially with it down, like he did. He went head first into the guys' chest and hurt himself. I hope he's all right, but it's not looking good.

Prayers and thoughts our with him, his family, and the entire organization.

It's been dangerous, but football = $. All football players know the risks they take. I'm at work now just got in the office and witnessed a terrible car accident. Bad things happen all day everyday, that's life. Football players happen to be on a stage. I'll say a prayer for the dog killing, pumped on steroids, going to strip clubs, millionare athlete right after i say a prayer for the guy in the accident i witnessed in the caravan, who by the way was hanging half way out of his windshield. Could everyone say a prayer for the ordinary joe-smoe too? Thanks!

I believe at this point, football is as safe as ever (not to speak down on injured players). The NFL has rules and regulations to abide by. When the league was still in it's infancy, the game was a lot rougher.
