Ok, just went back and re-read your question. Well, guess what there is NO way for an employer to know if the green card is valid. Stupid government. Our responsibilities as employers end at taking a photocopy of the card and properly filling out the I-9 form here is a link to the basically worthless page of government bs..

It says if you think it is a fake card, don't hire them. Thanks for the help. You could try calling the local Immigration office and asking them what you should look for in a green card that was issued in the year your potential employee's was issued.

What crap! Anyway, when I first read your question my mind entered "ss number" not green card, so I did learn some new info that may help some of us:

I have been hiring for over 15 years and have never found one. But I started thinking, man with the immigration debacle and the aftermath of 9-11 you would think there is. So I did a quick search and lo and behold the SSA now has a system online! Will wonders never cease!

It looks like you have to register your company and then they mail you your username and password, I assume to keep credit fraud to a minimum. So it won't be instant.

What I would do is if you want to hire the guy, hire him. Just make sure he fills out all paperwork and your application in full. Those are all legal documents and if you later find out he lied, you can fire him without notice and for no other reason than fraud.

Here is the website, I am going to register my company and run the check on a couple employees I am iffy about!
