I think you are talking about the Spanish Cuban American war. In that case, the Cubans had been fighting against the Spaniards for their independence for more than 30 years. When they were in the verge of defeating the Spanish troops, the yanks entered the conflict in order to obtain a military/political presence in the Antilles and snatch the victory from the Cubans. Later, they tried to keep a military government in Cuba, but it was not feasible. Therefore, they released Cuba to a Cuban government, but kept the Platt amendment that allowed them to intervene in Cuba whenever they wished, an insult to the Cubans, but it was either independence with that or no independence

Basically, Cuban rebels were revolting against Spanish rule, the U.S. was sympathetic to the Cuban cause. Then on 2-15-1898 the U.S.S. Maine blew up while moored in Havana harbor. The U.S. said it was Spanish sabotage (although it was probably just burning coal embers, or maybe the Cubans to get us into the war) .
Famous battles from the war include Teddy Roosevelt's "battle of San Juan Hill" and the "battle of Manila Bay" in the Philippines.
On 12-10-1898 the Treaty of Paris was signed to end to war. Spain relinquished control of Cuba, gave control of Guam and Puerto Rico to the U.S., and sold the Philippines to the U.S. for $20 million

Basically, it was about the U.S. trying to get its hands on former Spanish colonies in the Western Hemisphere. As a result of that war, the U.S. acquired Puerto Rico, the Philippines and Guam and occupied Cuba.
