Ok, we love the name Lily but are afraid it is going to be too popular in 2008. Its still our favorite, but are trying to come up with some alternatives. Madeline is our middle name, as it has family meaning. What do you think of:

Lily Madeline
Avery Madeline
Lucy Madeline
Riley Madeline

I also love the names Zoe and Maya, but our last name is very Gaelic sounding and I don't think they go together well.

Thanks so much to everyone who weighed in -- I appreciate it. We're not using Madeline as a first name because I'm not crazy about the way it sounds with our last name and because a good friend is naming her October baby Madeline.

Also -- Avery and Riley did begin as boys names, but are now more popular as girls names. Courtney, Ashley, Leslie, and Lindsey were all once boys' names who made the same transition -- and are now seldom heard as boys names. Just an observation :-).

Thanks again for your thoughts!

If you are truly in love with the name Lily, then that is the name that you should use. Don't let outside influences change your decision.

That being said, if you are open to change and willing to choose something else, then I think your best picked alternatives are Avery Madeline or Riley Madeline, especially if your surname is Irish. Both have wonderful sounds in conjunction with the middle name, and are also beautiful names for a little girl.

Avery Madeline would be a good pick if you didn't want to use Lily, but if you like Lily more you should go ahead and use it. Just because a name is popular doesn't mean you shouldn't use it.

Of all the names on your list, I actually think Lily is the least trendy. I've seen a ton of parents name their kids Avery and Riley (which are boy names, by the way). Lucy is probably equal to Lily on the popularity scale, but if you like Lily better then go for it.

Love Lily and Lucy. What about Lila? It's close to Lily but not as popular.

I don't like like Avery as a girls name and Riley (another boys name) is becoming just as popular as Lily
