Autopsies are done when a death is unexplained or unexpected for unknown reasons. Many times the family will request an autopsy on family members if they are not satisfied with the doctor's explanation as to why their loved one has died. I worked for a Pathologist at one time and we would often go and do autopsies that were paid for by the family members. One time we did one on a man who went into the hospital for routine prostate surgery and he died afterwards. He ended up having had a pulmonary embolism, which is a blood clot in the lungs. The police and other authorities will request an autopsy if they are investigating the possibility of murder, suicide, etc. Hope I answered your question. I guess I could have just said, "Yes sometimes it is an option and NO...sometimes it's not".

Most autopsies are ordered if there is a question as to the death of the person. Sometimes an autopsy can be denied depending on the religious beliefs of the deceased.

Yeah it is.
However, if you really wanna make sure of the actual and exact cause/s of death, have it done.
