there still would only be a small number of drivers that perform well. in the IRL there are 3 main teams, target chip ganassi, team penske and andretti green racing(AGR). those teams have the most money and the best drivers in the league. that's only 8 drivers. if they were to put 40 drivers on the same oval it would just get congested and it would only slow down the faster drivers. as it is i see a new driver almost every week and the Indy 500 which is the oldest and most popular race in the U.S. consists of around 30 drivers from both IRL and CART. the main reason is its simply too dangerous, a lot of NASCAR wrecks involve drivers who still have a chance of finishing the race, with open wheel cars many of the wrecks are not only damaging to the car it can also be fatal. an open cockpit makes for dangerous racing as well as the force of a wreck in a car going 220-230 around an oval is 30 times the G-forces of a space shuttle launch.

Well thanks to the Cart and IRL split, thats why there are less cars, Its wonder that they can come up with 33 for the Indy 500 field, and with drivers leaving IRL and coming to Nascar unless they get more drivers in IRL the races will just get smaller, its fun watching them on the ovals.

Thank God we don't have 42 cars racing each race! I don't wanna see 10-5 cautions during one race like Nascar has. When a stock car wrecks, they have a great chance of continuing of having it fixed, when an Indy car crashes, most of the time it results in a DNF. Also, there's less money in Indy, so the sponsors put in less money. Therefore, less cars on the track.

Because no body can afford to race. There is not enough prize money to run an indy team also they don't have a huge audience so they don't get as much in sponsorship dollars as NASCAR so it is just simply not cost effective to run an INDY team.

It's because of the split with CART about a decade ago. Instead of a lot of cars running in one series, they're now spread out over two smaller series.

I don't think that I would want more cars on the track! This way I know every drivers name, and a little bit about them.

Safety. Cars are much more fragile, not able to take the bumping that Nascar can.
