Yes...all poets are authors, but not all authors are poets...think of it like this: can an apple be called a fruit? yes, all apples are fruit, but not all fruit can be called apples.
An author (he or she) "creates" something that is written, whether they be a copywriter for an advertising agency, a playwrite, a novelist, a poet, a editor, an essayest, a lyricist, etc.
