A stayed sentence means it is being held aside, the sentence does not have to be served at this time. Usually, a judge will stay a sentence pending certain conditions, alcohol or drug counselling, get a job, education, etc. If the conditions are met, the sentence will never have to be served. If they are not, the sentence is imposed.
