It all depends on the kind of candles you are trying to burn. If you are using the kind that are to burn down completely then you need to be squeezing or pushing the softened part toward the flam so that you don't end up with this hole and the wick being surrounded and towered over by wax. The only way you can finish burning your candle is to cut off the candle that is left above your wick if it is over 1/2 inch above wick and get the wick out so it is showing a little bit then as you burn it squeeze or push it in. If it is a candle that is not to burn down completely i would suggest purchasing the kind of candles that do burn down completely.

To properly burn a candle, you must burn it the first time only for 1 hour. Then extinguish the candle. Let the wax that melted harden. If you don't the wax melts too quickly and drowns your wicks.

As the wax melts pour some of it off into a small can (the size of your origal candle holder if possible. Then when it partially rehardens put in to the bottome of your candle. Keep doing this until your wick is gone then buy some new wick and remake your candle.

Your wicks are really too long when you first get started. A long wick allows a larger flame -- which melts much more wax, and drowns itself.
Trim the original wick down, keeping the flame small. It's not as pretty, but a valid solution.
Use extreme care in pouring off wax -- hot wax can burn you, damage wood and fabric furniture/carpeting, or melt the container -- causing a fire hazard.

Sometimes this happens. I think it is becasue the wicks are too short. Try pouring out some of the wax as it melts to make the wick stand up taller than the wax. Or you could just cut out some of the wax.
