There is hot water and cold water, but the way the previous owner installed the knob there is no way to mix the cold and hot water to get warm water. It is obviously installed incorrectly. (turn to the right its cold, turn to the left it's hot, in the middle it's off) I think it should slide out to control flow and then have some type of dial setting for temperature. Is there an easy fix or should I call a plumber?

I just replaced my shower stem this weekend.

Pop off the front of the plastic handle, you should have a single screw in the middle. Remove the screw and the plastic handle, and then use pliers to pull out the cartridge.

The cartridge will be a combination of plastic, brass and black rubber fittings. Don't try to take it apart.

You should be able to slide it right back in, turning it 90 degrees so that it operates the valves/input water source correctly.

If you damage it, or that doesn't help, take the entire cartridge to the hardware store for a replacement. They run about $10 to maybe $40 for the unit (depending on the model and whether you have a name brand or off-brand).

the blending valve (cartridge) has failed. I surely have the comparable faucet. Its somewhat no longer that problematic to alter one out. person-friendly hand approaches are all that are mandatory. close the water off that feeds the residing house. you ought to have a knob some the place that kills the each and every of the water. this is extremely substantial to do ! eliminate the knob cover eliminate center screw eliminate steel notched collar eliminate protecting C clip ( this carry the cartridge in place while below stress from water) With pliers pull the cartridge directly out. The could be require some attempt to eliminate, esp if its in no way been replaced. once you're taking the only you have out, flow take to ironmongery save and tournament up. do no longer however the extra on your funds unit, the internals are all plastic and the valve will fail lower back. Get the OEM because of the fact the indoors area of the cartridge is steel. opposite order to place in, practice dishwashing cleansing soap to valve to lube orings so it is going to slide decrease back in. turn the water decrease back on, it could make some unusual noises once you turn the water decrease back on, its established purely purging the air out of the gadget. sturdy success, or pay an high priced plumber.

Most all shower control valves are fixable. Check the manufacturer's web site for an instruction manual for the model you have so you don't inadvertently break something in disassemble and so that you know how to reassemble it correctly. Most manufacturers also have a toll-free number for technical assistance.
