When I pulled into my parking spot (and killed the engine) at work this morning I was greeted by a lovely plume of steam rising out of the hood. Turns out when I popped the hood I was dealing with a pin prick type (though a little larger) leak in the radiator hose.

I am right across from an auto parts store and need to buy at least a day before I lose the car to the shop. Do they have anything that I (note: I am not mechanically inclined) can use to patch the leak?

Also, it seemed like I lost a pretty good amount of fluid, do I need to replace some of that in the radiator? And - dumb question - if so, what do I replace it with? Water, antifreeze, mixture???

Are these permanent fixes or do I need to get the hose replaced? What's the damage $$?

Thanks.

You absolutely can patch the hole, they make a hose patching tape. It's only a temporary fix, and depending on how bad the hole is it may only hold for a few trips to and from work. You can buy the pre diluted antifreeze (generally a 50/50 mix) and add it to the resivor. Make sure you get the right kind of antifreeze for your car. If you have a Chevy, you'll probably need DexCool. Just ask at the auto parts store, they'll steer you in the right direction. Don't over fill it though. Replacing the hose should be cheap, but if you can't do it yourself you're probably going to be charged by a shop for at least an hour of work.

Depending on the car this should be a easy repair! dependinf on the vehicle. Your better bet would be to go across the street and buy a new hose it will run you about $10-20.00. In most cases you will only need a screwdriver!

Good Luck!!!

Your best bet is to buy you a new hose $10-$15 and put it on yourself, if you patch it, it wont last very long.

If you wipe it clean you can wrap Duck Tape around it tightly and it hold for a good time. At least until you get a new one. Always carry Duck Tape in your car. It the best tool you ever use.

Once you use Duck Tape you can be an Official Club Member and tell your story.
