I live near the Brandywine River in PA. I have had a picnic at the Brandywine Battlefield. Just to think of all of the bloodshed and lost lives didn't make me think of it as a good place for a picnic. They have a picnic area there but it still strikes me as odd.

You could explain it to him if you're honestly nervous about the situation. Tell him "remember having this on our first date?" or something along those lines. My girlfriend has done that to me before. Guys can be fairly forgetful (at least, I am), so it's helpful to point them in the right direction.
