The other day there was a spider (about size of a nickel) in my apt. Than another one appeared yesterday It had a brown brown body with a head that was brown and tan striped. Its body (abdomon) was long and came to a point sort of. It looked a little furry. It also had these things on its head that looked like hooks. I did some looking and came up with Funnelweb Spider? It said they usually are not found inside. Anyone know about common household spiders?

This is probably just a large wolf spider or huntsman or maybe a kind of wood spider. I highly doubt a funnel web spider would be in NY and if it was that it would be indoors. Just catch it in a jar and put it outside. All you have to worry about is the black widow wich can be easily recognized by it's black color, long legs, and the red marking. The Brown Recluse is a bit harder because it looks a lot like a common wolf spider from afar but it is a bit smaller usually and is commonly called the "fiddle back" because it has a violin shaped marking on it's back. Just look for these and for the most part you have nothing to worry about.

Funnel Web Spiders are the deadliest spiders there are and are alot bigger than the one you saw, and you certainly don't find them in New York. But, strangers things have happened so I would suggest getting an exterminator in just in case.

Common household spiders are usually black or brown and just a little bigger than the one you saw.

I'd have to see a pic.. but it doesn't sound like one of the few poisonous spiders in the US (Brown Recluse, Black Widow, Brown Widow) So I doubt you have anything to worry about other than the "eww" factor.

Just to add to this, here's a pamphlet on common spiders of New York (from Cornell University):
http://www.entomology.cornell.edu/IthacaCampus/Articles/SpidersOfNY/mainColumnParagraphs/00/attachment/Rayor%20Gilbert%20Common%20Spiders%20of%20NY%2007.pdf

Cornell University also has an extension service that may be able to provide more information to you. Find your nearest branch at:
http://www.cce.cornell.edu/editor/show/In_Your_Community

I've often found extension services very helpful in identifying bugs, pests, etc.

The only spider you don't want that one to be is the Brown Recluse or Loxosceles reclusa. There are great pictures of it at wikipedia.com
There are only a handful of spiders of medical importance, the brown recluse is one of them.
