It could be faulty ram if you have some spare ram that is known to work fine try that but make sure is is the same type of ram!

A couple of notes that may be of interest.
If you don't have virus software, or you have had different virus software on your computer and didn't UnInstall it properly this can cause problems.
Next if you have never used the System Tools and the Disc Cleanup options as well as used the Internet Options under tools in your Browser to delete any of the junk you have downloaded from places you have visited this can cause a slowdown that you are expieriancing.
There are certian things that must be done to maintain your computer the same as a car.
I use the Disc Cleanup option once a week need to or not.
I use Spybot's Search and Destroy and
Lavasofts Adaware the same once a week. These are both free or you can donate to there cause to keep them and you up and running.
Let's not forget, you must have some form of Virus Protection.
You may be suffering from a Virus, or a Trojan Horse.
Run this it will tell you pretty quick what your problem is.

There are a couple of things you can do, Restart PC in whilst pressing the F8 key "TRY" the restart windows with last known config that worked see what that dose,
Failing that Restart in safe mode once there go to start menu =>Run and type "msconfig"
=>go to startup and remove all of the ticks (you can put them back once you have rectified the issue) one thing you are looking for is weird things foinstance you could have a file that starts another file and once it runs it removes itself. So if you see a tick in a box and nothing written in both "startup item & Command" untick it and dont re tick it. Click ok then reboot, IF that dosent work, Remove the drive from system and place into a working pc and run a virus scanner to it as prviously mentiond use Kaspersky. If that fails while the drive is still fuctional its time to Backup

the best and easiest way would be to format the hard drive and re-run xp or vista (if you have it) but if you dont want to do erase all your hard work, try putting some ram inside your computer then run xp for a recover... it happened to me the ram i had was a LITTLE bit too small for the xp so it was running fine and somewhere along the line it started freezing...

Usually when the computer freezes it's the operating system or in your case xp, I would format the hard drive and reinstall windows xp.
