I have a daughter from a one night stand while on vacation a few years ago. I gave her my madian name (father not listed on BC because I have no way to find him). I want to have her last name legally changed to my married name. What would be the best way to have this done? I live in the state of PA.

The court house should be able to give you the paper work that has to be filled out---Clerk of the Court. Make sure that you tell them that the Bio-father cannot be located.. yada yada yada -- summer fling--OK I really do not think you need an arttorney... The attorney is just going to fill out the paper work...Pay the fees when you turn it in. May have to make a court appearance--talk to the judge... or ya may not...
The whole thing is basically paper work and money..

Most daughters end up changing their name when they get married anyways, so for me, it wouldn't matter. If my daughter wanted my maiden name as her last name, I'd be ok with it, especially if the reason was because she got teased. I really don't feel that a last name like Ham would hinder you later on in life cause most people tend to mature and not let a name get in the way of life.

i had this done for my son.
you do not have to hire a lawyer.... that is costly.
you have to go to the courthouse- and ask for papers for a legal change of name....talk to them up there-- they would know more.
it will ask for the fathers name - but, if you don't have it- you dont' have it. it was a one night stand. you might have to go to court for this to talk to a judge before getting it done- but, its not a big deal. I did it.

note: something else to think about: I had this done. I got divorced. now my son has my ex-husbands last name. (which legally isn't even his dad anymore) - and, I just got married again after 20 years apart - to..... this sons biological dad..so, here we sit with different names then him once again......yeah, nice.

i believe u can go to the nearest town hall in the city where she was born and apply for the name change i think they have to list it in the local newspaper for one month and in the town where the father was last known to give anyone a chance to come forward then after that it will be changed when u go back to the town hall for their monthly meeting at least that is how its done in rhode island

Hi...

you can call the courthouse in your county to find out what the process might be.. sometimes it's just a matter of filling out forms and paying the court fees (which are upwards of $400 in Ohio, i do know this).

take care.

Go to a lawyer..they'll help you with all the paperwork.

Call one, they will mostly give you free info over the phone.

Well, you have to do it through court. But they won't do it because you have to have the Dad's last name on it. Unless you can prove that he wasn't there for her years then you could probably do it, its COSTLY!
