Underrated: Ash, they're had 5 albums, their lastest Twilight of the Innocents is suppose to be there last album. But there's been hardly a word said about it. You can imagine the amount of media coverage there'd be if some crap boyband split up. Proof that a good band rarely gets the respect they deserve.
Overrated: Fall out Boy they're had three albums, lastest being Infinity on High. While they're not the worst band ever, they're certainly nothing special.

Overrated - Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, Evanescence (The Open Door, that really wasn't a good album)

Ok, first of all, you ask for underrated and overrated EVER, so please don't listen to any of these other guys answers. Anyone who has come out in the last 10 years can't be included in any EVER category. With that said here are my picks:
MOST UNDERRATED EVER = DEEP PURPLE
These guys always reinvented their original sound and were way ahead of their time in developing the first pre "heavy" rock sounds before Led Zeppelin came out and took all the credit for it. There would be no heavy metal if not for the heavy innovations of DP. Nothing against Zep, they are my second fav band ever.
MOST OVERRATED EVER = GRATEFUL DEAD
They had a cult/religious following in the 60s that just kept getting bigger and bigger, but it was all a drug-induced theory that you HAD to see Grateful Dead when you were high. They have never contributed anything memorable and never composed anything that would warrant them to receive the acclaim they have received over the decades.
