I need to extend by 802.11b Netgear WiFi router to the signal can reach my living room on the other side of my "Faraday cage" of an apartment. The signal from my WiFi router almost reaches but it's quite strong enough for consistent Internet connection.

I assume adding a WiFi signal repeater and pluging it in half way between the two rooms is the solution. I'm mainly going to be using the signal for a Xbox 360 and my laptop.

Are there any "gotchas" about using repeaters for WiFi? Any models that are recommended by folks here?

Hi,
The best solution would be to use another router plugged into your present router but set up as an access point.

A wireless repeater may end up costing you nearly as much as a new wireless router that could solve your issue by itself.

Example:

D-Link DIR-655 wireless router. Cost $129.
It's 802.11n compliant so it has a range of 75 meters minimum. I typically get 100M inside my house without problems. It's faster than 802.11g too but I got it primarily for the range. You can use the Gigabit Ethernet ports too. I use this router with my 802.11g card in my laptop all the time. No compatibility problems at all.

The best solution is to Upgrade your Router to one of the newer models that supports 802.11g or n draft.
The signal strength of the older b Routers just isn't there.
The use of a repeater is used in commercial applications.
It will be cheaper and easier to upgrade the Router.
And, not to worry, they are all reverse compatible thus making them a good choice weather you are using b or g
