From what ive seen a load of people here in the "football" section always seem to come over to NASCAR to rag on it not being a sport. If that is the case why so?

Some of the reasons given tend to be:
"I drive my car for four hours at a time does that make me an athlete? ".

No, because you are not racing it and your car is considerably easier to drive and it is going at 1/4 the speed they are going with power steering and air conditioning.

"anybody can drive a car"

And anybody can kick or throw a football. It doesnt mean they can do it well and in a high pressure situation. I can throw a football, does that mean i should be awarded a place on the bears team?

"The car does all the work".

And the football(soccer ball) goes into the net. Does it get there on its own though? Of course not.

"The drivers arent fit"

The races are 4hours long with no breaks. Try driving a go kart for 4 hours and tell me how easy it was. Your arms will be dying for a break after 10mins

And i dont think footballers really break a sweat considering in a 3 hour game they only have any actual activity for 5-7 minutes(thats a fact btw, not just a random number).

Im more of an F1 fan to be honest and there isnt even a debate there that they are athletes because they are built like fighter pilots but NASCAR is without doubt a sport too.

If its not, why isnt it?

Cue a load of unoriginal redneck, tobacco chewing jokes upon whichever AC Slater type who writes them will congratulate himself wildly.

No bottom contributor, are you a complete moron? You dont do it competitvely therefore you are not an athlete. I kick a football at home that doesnt make me an athlete. What an incredible dumbass...

Sheklikak...you a football fan is giving out about the amount of sponsors that drivers have....HAHAHAHA American football is the only sport in the world that actually stops so that they acan take an ad break and you call NASCAR whores?

MoreTreesLessBush: A spelling be does not take any physical energy so no it doesnt fit any criteria of sports. Driving a car takes a huge amount of physical energy. Remeber these cars are nothing like the cars you or me drives. You have to fight the back sliding out, the front understeering, wrestling the car onto the correct line, etc

Where did the term "Sports Car" come from?
Of course Nascar is a sport - and also great entertainment.

By the way - ESPN officially declared -
Rock - Paper - Scissors is now a sport.

They televised the world championship a couple months ago.

come on lets be for real driving a car doesn't constitute a sport Golf is more physically demanding. I would say power walking is more of a sport than driving in ovals for 100's of miles. If anybody practices enough driving they could race in the indy 500. you have to be physically gifted to play in the NFL. that being said every time i respond to one of these nascar is a sport questions I always hear about how hot the cars get. Heat doesn't make a sport. If that were the case people living in the desert should have a sport called LIVING. Put some a/c in the darn cars and slow down 5 mph. the HOBBY of car racing should be looked at as something to do when people are bored so they go for a nice 500 mile drive.

Hmmm... Ever notice when a driver comes out and he's wearing his little jumpsuit? See all of those advertising patches all over his suit? Like he's selling space on his body? Like a whore? See, that's why its not a sport. Prostitution isn't a sport. In fact, its illegal so all of those little left-turn whores should be ***** slapped and put in jail. Then again, since most of the drivers are gay Blue-Boy reading fudge packers anyway, a night in the pokey would be like a fantasy vacation.

Yes, Dork-a-licious, all whores. By the by, football isn't "the only sport in the world that takes a break". Breaks in baseball, basket ball during the constant fouls, heck, soccer is a break. Funny you go in this direction defending a "sport" where the participants sit on their butts the whole time.

Chew in this: Is the 250 pound guy that fishes or plays darts/pool/bowls (all sports) while guzzling beer and hot wings an athlete? By your definition, yes. And since athletes are in shape, therefore....

And because I just can't let the weak minded off the hook so easily, I've played football. You ever drive NASCAR? NO?!! Maybe you shouldn't talk so much about what you don't know.

Hurry and respond to this so I can slice you up some more, fool

i used to race my motorcycle on the interstate at speeds over 180 mph does that make me an athlete or it a sport?
Supercross i would consider a sport, b/c it takes more stamina than any sport except soccer. Also have to do alot of athletic stuff while racing.

How can racing be done non-competitively? so who's the dumbass?
Also who kicks a football in the backyard by themself. That's just sad.

Terrance,

I would like to invite you to our local go-kart track and race with us next Sunday. You can drive my old kart (no, I'm not letting you tear up my new one, unless you want to give me a $3000 deposit to replace it). At the end of the day, you can tell me all about how it was just a Sunday drive. Of course, you'll most likely be unable to move Monday due to the enormous amount of work you'll do keeping it on the track, but at least you'll get educated. Ignorant people should just be quiet.

And to the original asker: If you can drive a kart for 4 hours you have my undying respect!

Its considered part of MotorSports, that is why they call it a sport. Not a diehard fan, but have watched bits and pieces of races, and to drive for that long at those speeds with that many other racers on the track has to take some kinda stamina.

I think that if you call NASCAR a sport, then you open the floodgates to call any competition a sport. Take a spelling bee for example, it fits all of your criteria listed.

"Everyone spells, does that make me an athlete?"
No, because not everyone spells on a stage in a gym into a microphone for a whole audience.

"Anyone can spell."
To quote you exactly, "It doesnt mean they can do it well and in a high pressure situation."

"The words do all the work."
Do they project themselves through the microphone letter by letter? Of course not.

"The spellers aren't fit."
You try standing on your feet on a stage for hours and see how easy it is.

Just as it is absurd to call a spelling a sport, it is absurd to call NASCAR a sport. Does that mean that it's not a competition? No. It just means that it's not a sport.

OK, fine, it’s a sport.

A boring, lame, redneck sport.
Look ma car go fast…hu hu hu.

To compare football to NASCAR is STUPID.
You have %1000 better chance of driving for NASCAR than being a RB in the NFL.

Who wants to watch people driving around in circles 4 or 500 times?? There he goes, no there he goes.

NASCAR and golf are skills that require a certain amount of athleticism. To label either as a true sport is unjust.
